Apple's Mysterious Chips
hmmm.. there's been a flurry of news surrounding the new chips used inside the
new ipod nano.. seems that they've been stamped with an apple logo and no one
seems to know what they do... which is interesting..
how difficult could it be to identify what each chip does?? it seriously isn't
that difficult... you can infer it first, from the peripherals connected to
each chip... if it's pins are connected to the LCD, chances are it's an LCD
controller.. if it's pins are connected to the earphones, chances are it's
some sort of CODEC/DAC...
i guess the fuss that people are making is because they cannot identify
the "exact" model of chip that's being used... well, anyone who really wants
to find out, can... all they need is the proper technical know how... but i
won't dwell into those here...
and it's perfectly in apple's right to stamp whatever they want onto these
chips... maybe they're new apple chips... however, it's never a good idea to
hide things through obscurity...
maybe apple is worried that people will reverse engineer and hijack the apple
to run linux or something.. but that's actually good... someone who has the
necessary skills to hijack + rewrite the apple firmware, wouldn't find
missing markings too much of an issue to deal with... seriously...
unless these chips are custom made apple chips, there's certainly a way to
identify the exact model + make of these chips...
