Best Selling Console over Christmas

Guess what was the best selling console over the christmas season. If you guessed the Wii, PS3 or Xbox360, you would be wrong. It was the PS2!! Like I've always been telling my friends, the PS2 will still be around for quite a few more years. At the high end, the competition is obviously between the PS3 and Xbox360 for dominance. However, at the low end, Sony isn't going to pull out the PS2 as yet because it can still compete with the Wii.

The PS2 is a well established brand product with countless software titles released for it. It is priced significantly cheaper than the Wii as well. Therefore, in terms of a good low end console, the PS2 would be it. So, it isn't surprising that the PS2 still has another 2 years or so of life left in it. And now that the PS2 has achieved economies of scale for so many years, it doesn't make sense for Sony to stop producing a profitable product. This is particularly true since the PS3 is still a loss leader at the moment.

However, in about 3 years or so, I would think that the Wii would dominate, followed by the PS3 and Xbox360. This isn't prejudicial in any way. It's just that the Wii caters to a much wider audience than either of the other two consoles. Therefore, it will probably sell more units than the other two. The PS3 is an extremely high-end machine that was made for the future. The Xbox360 will start to show it's age in couple more years. So, that's that.

I'm still gonna get the Wii instead of the PS2 though since the PSX2 emulator has begun to mature recently.
