New Notebook

my faithful notebook, which has been serving me for more than 2 years, is
starting to show signs of aging.. it is starting to exhibit a
certain 'slowness' in it's operation.. so, i have been looking around at new
notebooks.. i plan to get one next year, before i graduate, while i'm still a
student, to make use of my student discount..

obviously, in a year, things are going to change.. however, it doesn't hurt to
start looking around now.. i'm quite in love with the macbook.. it's small,
about 1 pound heavier than my current fujitsu, and looks cool.. and it's
surprisingly cheap as well... most other core duo notebooks i've looked at of
a similar spec, cost a little more than the macbook...

the only drawback is the lack of ports and the use of integrated graphics..
however, since this machine will not be used for games but used for serious
work, i would think that the integrated graphics solution is more than
sufficient.. hehe.. price wise, the macbook is cheaper than my current
fujitsu was when i bought it.. even with the 1Gb model..

the cheapest model of the macbook is cheap.. however, the increase in cost for
the better models doesn't seem to be justified by the slight increase in
performance.. heck, the cost of having it in black is more than 100 dollars,
for a similar hardware as a white model..

so, i will shop around a bit more.. prices are likely to go down soon, with
the release of core 2 duo in a few days time.. and the macbook models will
probably receive an upgrade to the lineup by the time i want to buy one..
hopefully, the price points stay the same..

i tried a macbook in currys.digital today.. it was very responsive.. however,
it does run a little warm.. the graphics performed well enough for the smooth
OSX effects.. software wise, i'm certainly going to use Linux!! i'm
definitely not going to use the MacOSX, nice that it is.. simply because, it
isn't Open Source anymore..
